School Calendar for 2009-2010

At its March 9 meeting, The Talladega City Board of Education approved the calendar for the 2009-2010 school year.

School Calendar for Next Year

The Calendar Committee met this afternoon and tallied the votes for next year's calendar.

By a vote of 199 to 89, the winner is Option 1.

At the bottom of the screen, you will see tabs that say "Option 1" and "Option 2." Click on the tabs to view each of the two calendar options. The major difference between the two calendars involves spring break. Option #1 has spring break where it has traditionally been. Option #2 would have moved spring break to after testing.

The next step is for the recommendation from the Calendar Committee to go to Dr. Horton. She will then make a recommendation to the Talladega City Board of Education.

The Calendar Committee will meet again on February 19 and the winning calendar will be determined.

Calendar Changes

The Board of Education made changes to the 2008-2009 school calendar at last night's meeting:

April 24 is now a holiday.
April 27 is now a professional development day (No students).

May 1 is now a school day.
May 4 is now a school day.

Reminder: December 19 is a Full Day of School

Now is as good a time as any to look at the school calendar and realize that the last day before the Christmas holidays is not an early dismissal. Even though the calendar we have posted on this site has no indication of early dismissal and we have already done one post on TeachTalladega specifically saying there is no early dismissal and another on TalladegaCitySchools, I have no doubt there will be those who are still confused and ask why nobody let them know.

School Calendar for 2008-2009

On Monday night, the Board Education approved the calendar for the 2008-2009 school year. The link to the calendar is here. You will also notice a link on the sidebar.

Dr. Horton's recommendation did include one change from the option presented. Option 3 originally included a holiday on April 10 (Good Friday). Instead, we will have a holiday on April 13. The reasoning for the change was two-fold:

1. April 10 concludes the window for testing and is a valuable day to conduct make-up tests. Because of the requirement that we test 95% of not only all students, but 95% of students in each subgroup, one student can make a big difference, and one more available day to conduct that testing can make a big difference.
2. Representatives from Talladega City, Talladega County, Sylacauga City, AIDB, and CACC sat down at the same table to examine the calendar options of each other in an attempt to see if we could align our calendars while at the same time giving our individual school systems autonomy. That experiment worked surprising well. Moving our holiday from April 10 to April 13 put us in line with our neighbors.

You will notice two significant points about this calendar:

1. Both students and teachers have an entire week for Thanksgiving.
2. The school year will end a week later than normal. This allows us a little "breathing room" in terms of weather days and race weekends.

Calendar for Next Year

The voting for the calendar for next year is as follows:

• Calendar 2--135
• Calendar 3--151

Calendar 3 will go to Dr. Horton and appear on the Board of Education agenda for January. To view the calendar options, click here

Calendar Update

The Calendar Committee met this afternoon to tally ballots. Only two votes separated the top two choices. The results were as follows:

• Option 1--69
• Option 2--87
• Option 3--89

Because the closesness, the committee felt the most resposible thing to do would be allow you to vote again on the top two choices, in other words a run-off between Option 2 and Option 3.

• Option 2--You have three days for Thanksgiving (just like you have now). You will have a holiday and a weather day at race weekend time.
• Option 3--You have an entire week for Thanksgiving. The school years ends one week later on this calendar, giving some breathing room to take weather days and holidays.

The Calendar Committee will meet again on December 18 to tally the votes from each school. Between now and then, and representative from your building will be having you submit your vote for the option of your choice. Each employee gets a vote.

• Option 2--You have three days for Thanksgiving (just like you have now). You will have a holiday and a weather day at race weekend time.
• Option 3--You have an entire week for Thanksgiving. The school years ends one week later on this calendar, giving some breathing room to take weather days and holidays.

The Calendar Committee will meet again on December 12 to tally the votes from each school. Between now and then, and representative from your building will be having you submit your vote for the option of your choice. Each employee gets a vote.
